Eiji Han Shimizu
Producer of
the “Happy” Movie
They are many theories and self-help books about happiness, but for most
of us the concept is abstract and our quest personal. Eiji Han Shimizu decided
to confront his, and embarked on a happiness expedition.
Biography
He travelled the world from Namibian desert villages to Brazilian beaches to find out what true happiness is all about. He shares his journey in the Happy movie.
Eiji Han Shimizu was born in Yokohama, Japan in 1970. He is a media producer and the creator of a highly acclaimed biography-like Manga series (graphic novel and comic book in the Japanese language), which has been published in 10 languages and in over 20 countries. Eiji recently finished producing a feature-length documentary film on happiness entitled Happy. He travelled all over the world with academy-nominated film director, Roko Belic, and interviewed the brightest minds in psychology, neuro-science, philosophy and spirituality as they looked deep into what makes people genuinely happy.
Happy combines cutting-edge science from the new field of “positive psychology” with real-life stories of people from around the world whose lives illustrate these findings. It chronicles the story of a beautiful woman named Melissa Moody, a mother of three who had a “perfect life” until the day she was run over by a truck. Disabled for nine years and disfigured for life, amazingly she is happier now than before her accident. Manoj Singh, a rickshaw puller from the slums of Kolkata, India who lives in a hut made of plastic bags with his family, is found to be as happy as the average American.
There simply aren’t any happy selfish people. Happiness reveals itself to those who search beyond themselves to become compassionate beings.Through these and other stories Happy leads us toward a deeper understanding of how we can all live more fulfilling, healthy and happy lives.
The quest for genuine happiness has changed Eiji’s life profoundly. He is now a passionate meditator with a Positive Psychology certification, and currently resides in the place that makes him feel most happy: in Ubud, Bali.
